U.S. drone crashes in Pakistan


A U.S. drone has crashed in the tribal areas of Pakistan. It was reported in some of the Pakistani press and electronic media that the drone had been gunned down by tribesmen. U.S. drone frequently fly over the tribal areas of Pakistan along the border with Afghanistan. The drones have been used to carry out attack inside Pakistani territory. This has strained relations between the countries considerably. The Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan Army General Ashfaque Pervez Kayani made a clear statement that no one will be allowed to conduct operations in Pakistani territory. Government of Pakistan has also reacted very strongly and lodged protest with the U.S. government.


President Asif Ali Zardari who met with President George Bush on the sidelines of his U.S. visit to address the U.N. General Assembly has also made a point of the sovereignty of Pakistan. In one of my earlier posts I had written that we must choose between dollars and sovereignty. If we need dollars from U.S. our sovereignty will definitely be compromised.

FBI investigating mortgage frauds

According to news reports FBI is investigating Fannie Mae, Freddi Mac, Lehman Brothers and American International Group (AIG) and their senior executive for possible mortgage frauds . FBI has not provided any specific information but said that the inquiries relate to a broader probe. It is investigating if anyone from these companies, including the senior executives provided misinformation.

It is said that FBI is investigating at least 26 fraud cases relating to the collapse of mortgage lending industry in US.

In a congressional hearing he has said that $700bn bail out plan for the US banking system must not be delayed. According to the bail-out plan the US Treasury wants unlimited powers to buy back the bad debt that has clogged the banking system.

President George Bush has also called for speedy approval of bail-out plan by the Congress. Federal Reserve President Ben Bernanke has also backed the plan saying urgent action is needed in order to saving the banking industry from further crisis.

Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley change status

Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have changed their status to become bank holding companies after concluding that there is no future in remaining investment bank. The investors believe that this model has now broken. This would allow the last two major investment banks to take deposits from investors.

The Federal Reserve Bank has given approval to this change and this would now enable Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to raise more funds by opening commercial banks. It will also enable them to get support from Federal Reserve in future.

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gillani has formed a committee to discuss modalities to purchase nuclear power plants. Energy crisis in Pakistan is deepening with each passing day. I think that the Prime Minister has made a good decision. The nuclear energy is not only cheap but clean as compared to energy obtained from burning fossil fuels.


I thin that we will need international support for obtaining nuclear technology for peaceful purposes which we do not have at present.

Zardari and his promises


It was said that President Pervez Musharraf had arrogated powers under the constititional seventeenth amendment which made the office of the president very powerful. He can dismiss the National and Provincial Assemblies, appoint provincial governors and services chief in his discretion. Under the original constitution of 1973 these powers rested in the office of the prime minister who is the chief executive of the country.



Zardari had said that he would repeal the seventeeth amendment and bring back the constitution in its original shape which envisiged a parliamentary system of government where president is only a ceremonial head who has to act of the advice of the prime minister. He had also said that this would be the first gift of the president elected by his party.



Now that he has got himself elected as the president of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, I think he has forgotten this promise as well. He has now lost all credibility with the people of the country because of his ability to break promises without any compunction. In his maiden speech in the joint sitting of the parliament he was all praise for his wife Benazir Bhutto, his father in law Zulfikar Ali Bhutto but said nothing new about the policies of his government for solving the problems of the country.



He has said that a committee will be formed to look into the constitutional package to reduce the powers of president. Now we all know very well that committees in Pakistan are formed when the idea is to sleep over any issue. I am sure that Zardari will not let go a single power that is available to him at president.
