Attempts are being made to rescue Lehman Brothers because a failure to save the investment bank could prompt investors to unload shares of financial companies which can affect stock markets at home and abroad. The possible buyers are the Bank of America and Barclays Plc.

The parties involved in the discussion over rescue of the troubled banks are arguing as to how to finance the bank to save it. There are reports that top officials from Federal Reserve and Treasury department along with senior Wall Street Bankers have met in New York to find a way to rescue the bank. The investment banks are trying to get some support from the government as it did in case of JP Morgan Chase & Co., to buy Bear Stearns.

The New York Times has reported that President Bush secretly approved orders in July that allowed US forces in Afghanistan to carry out assaults inside Pakistan without the prior approval of the Pakistan government. The Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, General Ashfaque Pervez Kayani had also said in a recent statement that the army would not allow any country to conduct operations inside Pakistan. The prime minister of Pakistan has also said in a press statement that only Pakistan has the right to conduct operations inside Pakistani territory. We are also hearing tall claims about national sovereignty and territorial integrity from all and sundry in Pakistan. All words but no action. The US officials have been saying for the past many months that they will chase Taliban and Al Qaeda elements inside Pakistan, but perhaps it was not taken seriously in Pakistan.

The warnings of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US army, Mike Mullen, were also not taken seriously. We keep on hearing the same old rhetoric that no one will be allowed to enter Pakistani territory. It is time that some action is also taken. But I don’t think that the government of Pakistan is in a position to challenge US.

The fourth largest US investment bank, Lehman Brothers has reported a massive net loss in the third quarter. The troubled bank has outlined radical plans to bolster its financial position. The losses have reached $6.6bn after the bank made a loss of $3.9bn between June and August.

The bank has decided to slash its dividend and will sell a stake in its lucrative fund management arm. It has also decided to reduce its exposure to residential mortgages.
