Yes, protesters had marched in Manhattan demanding accountability for Gaza.
Yes, the International Criminal Court had named Benjamin Netanyahu in a war-crimes warrant.
But a city mayor cannot stop a foreign leader from entering America.
That authority rests with Washington, and under Trump’s return to the White House, the door to such defiance is firmly locked.
Still, the myth caught fire.
To one side, Mamdani became a folk hero—a Muslim mayor daring to challenge the “Zionist establishment.”
To the other, he was a threat to civilisation itself.
Neither vision matches reality.
He governs buses, rent, sanitation— not foreign policy.
This is how modern propaganda works: it fuses one grain of fact with a mountain of fantasy.
A small victory becomes a revolution; a local reformer, a messiah.
Social media rewards exaggeration, not accuracy.
A lie dressed in conviction will always travel faster than a paragraph of context.
In Karachi, where I live, these stories flash across screens in tea shops and bank offices.
People nod, argue, repeat half-quotes.
The digital fire burns here too.
You start to realise how easily our sense of truth gets outsourced to someone else’s upload button.
For Mamdani, the real battles ahead are mundane and human—housing affordability, racial fairness, public trust.
Yet somewhere in the algorithm, he’s already been drafted into a war he never declared.
That’s the price of visibility in an age when every headline wants a hero or a villain, never a mayor doing his job.
Maybe the wiser act of resistance is not shouting louder, but pausing before we share.
Sometimes the bravest thing online is disbelief.
