Prime Minister of Pakistan Yousuf Raza Gilani has appointed Salim Raza as the new governor of the State Bank of Pakistan. Salim Raza has had a long career in Citibank . The outgoing governor Dr. Shamshad Akhtar was the first woman to be appointed governor of State Bank. She was appointed by President Pervez Musharraf for a period of three years which ends next month.
It is believed tha Dr. Akhtar refused any extension in her contract. I wish her best of luck. She has made a right decision. The position of the governor of State Bank of Pakistan is a challengng job, keeping in view the shaky economy of the country. Unfortunately a Citibank past is considered more than enough qualification for running the finances of country which I think is not a good approach. Running a bank is one thing and making policies for the whole of a country is quite a different matter.
The only qualification which so far I know about Salim Raza is that he had a long career in Citibank. Nothing more has been told about him.
